Crystal Cruises EXCLUSIVE
In August 2020, Crystal cancelled all cruises for the remainder of the year. Its parent company Genting Hong Kong had suspended payments to creditors citing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The new 200-passenger Crystal Endeavor was under construction at the time, with delivery scheduled for November 2020; that was delayed for a year because of the suspension of operations at the MV Werften shipyard in Germany.
In March 2021, Crystal announced all-Bahamas cruises aboard Crystal Serenity would start on July 3, 2021, with departures from Nassau and Bimini to work around CDC cruise bans due to COVID-19 in the US. Ports of call within the Bahamas included Harbour Island, Great Exuma, Long Island, and San Salvador. All passengers were required to be vaccinated for COVID-19. The opening booking day set a record for the most bookings on a single day in the company's history. Some destinations expressed concerns with the company's announcement, lack of consultation with local stakeholders, and negative impact to their existing tourism economy.
A&K cruises are offered on time-chartered boats (from the fleet of Ponant) with passenger capacity 150-200 per ship. The voyages visit polar destinations (Arctic and Antarctica), as well as Pacific Ocean islands (Japan, Australia), Europe (Greek Isles, Mediterranean, Baltic), Africa. A&K's Ponant-chartered voyages are inclusive of A&K Expedition Team (18 experts on every sailing), all English-speaking staff, butler service, luggage packing/unpacking and laundry service, WiFi Internet.
The company's sustainable travel policy (part of the Crystal Cares program) was implemented on June 8, 2019. By this fleetwide initiative, all plastic straws were completely eliminated and replaced with paper straws. Crystal Cares comprises various fleetwide environmental efforts and sustainable practices. In 2019 was signed the partnership deal with the global conservation organization ORCA (Organization for Respect and Care for Animals). By this partnership and as part of the OceanWatch Master Fisherman program, on select Alaskan cruises, Crystal ships are boarded by "Cruise Conservationists" for training, research and marine data collection.
Crystal Cruises planes provide private charters (1- to 28-night charter deals) and transportation for customers with booked Crystal cruises (regardless ocean, river or yacht). Private charter jet service is of superior quality and caters to corporate executives, small groups, wealthy families and discerning travelers looking for flexible and private luxury travel.
Its signature longer, more exotic cruises attract an affluent 55-plus crowd, though shorter sailings can skew slightly younger. North American passengers are in the majority, but Crystal takes pains to cater to an international mix of passengers, including a strong Asian contingent -- the ships will provide kimonos as well as bathrobes in accommodations.
On Black Tie Optional nights, held on cruises longer than seven days, men generally wear a dark suit with tie or a tuxedo; for women, it means a formal cocktail dress, evening gown or dressy evening separates. On the evening of the company's themed party, Crystal White Extravaganza, suggested dress is -- you guessed it -- white.
The crew onboard the Crystal Cruises ships received the news through the Captains of the vessels, while no official announcements have been made by the company President or representatives ashore. Crystal Cruises earlier suspended cruises through April 29, 2022, with River cruises suspended through the end of May 2022.
In total, Crystal Cruises will be offering 32 seven-night trips from July to October starting from Bahamas' Nassau or Bimini. The cruises will then shuttle passengers to five other destinations around the country: San Salvador, Long Island, Great Exuma, Harbour Island, and Bimini or Nassau, the latter depending on the sailing's starting point.
This impending cruising return is good news for parts of the country's "tourism-dependent" economy: like other travel hotspots, the coronavirus pandemic's pause on cruises "has been felt greatly" by the Bahamas, according to a press release.
Bookings for the tropical cruises will open on March 18 starting at $2,000 per person. The sailings will also follow Crystal Cruises' "Crystal Clean+" measures, which include arrangements like contactless dining, mask-wearing on certain parts of the ship, and social distancing protocols.
Crystal isn't the only cruise line using a COVID-19 vaccine mandate to safely usher in the return of cruising. Earlier this month, Royal Caribbean announced its first 'fully vaccinated' cruises on the Odyssey of the Seas departing from Israel.
With just two ships in its fleet, Crystal Cruises has to keep them moving from one destination to the other to cover the entire globe, and this they do to an extraordinary degree, offering cruises in eighteen different regions of the world throughout the 2018 and 2019 seasons.
In both cases mentioned above, the Rollover Credit will be valid for cruises commencing within twelve (12) months from the date of cancellation. This rollover is non-transferable and not redeemable for cash.
In keeping with the lifestyle trends of our guests, we wanted to let you know of important developments recently made to the smoking policy aboard the ships of Crystal Cruises. For the comfort and enjoyment of everyone, smoking will be prohibited in all indoor areas, except for the Connoisseur Club, effective with the first cruises in 2014. Outside smoking will be allowed in a limited number of designated spaces. The revised policy begins with the January 5, 2014 (v4301, Crystal Serenity) and January 8, 2014 (v4201, Crystal Symphony) voyages and eliminates smoking in all staterooms, suites, and corridors, as well as the Crystal Cove lounge and Pulse and Luxe nightclubs. Most areas of Crystal ships have been non-smoking for several years, including the restaurants, main entertainment lounges, all stateroom and suite verandahs, the Casino and Avenue Saloon.
Following the astounding response and enthusiasm about the 2016 sailing, Crystal has announced a second Northwest Passage route in 2017, open for booking now. Peninsula Petroleum Far East had filed a lawsuit against Crystal Cruises and Star cruises for breach of contract regarding the unpaid fuel. A federal judge issued an arrest warrant under maritime procedure on January 20 to seize Crystal Symphony when it enters U.S. waters, allowing a U.S. Marshal to board the ship and take charge, the AP reported. However, the ship diverted to the Bahamas so the warrant could not be executed.
"The Bahamas is ready and delighted to welcome cruise visitors back to the islands and to partner with Crystal Cruises in the effort to restore and help re-activate our tourism industry and protect jobs and businesses," said the Bahamian tourism minister. "Crystal Cruises will go on record as the only cruise line offering Bahamas-only voyages that highlight the signature features and experiences travelers can find here in our islands, and the support that these cruises will bring to multiple communities within the country will be tremendous."
